The heart of the lesson this Sunday was introspection. Paul exhorts us to look into the "bowels" of the church to examine HOW WE PERVERT THE GOSPEL. Then, looking into our individual hearts, HOW DO I PERVERT THE GOSPEL? We look around and believe that we are extremists as we cling to the Gospel. But the reality is that we are not looking to the "plumb" line of the clarity of God's Word. Pure and simply the Gospel is the Good News of the Lord Jesus Christ! It only takes one drop of ink (or for that matter, any impurity) to pollute, to water down, to stretch beyond recognition, or only color the pure Word of Truth. Heresy is truth with only a smidgen of error sprinkled in.
Is there a smidgen in our church? Is there a smidgen in your heart? What "works of your (flesh) hands" have you sprinkled in to pervert the Gospel? Is it "I just want to have fun!" "the Lord wants me to be HAPPY!" "A Christian's life should be like a rose garden!" "suffering is only a temporary condition!" "how we dress is not important!" "social drinking is not important!" "My children will listen to others better than me!" ... the list could go on and on. Let's examine our hearts and our thinking - does it line up with the Word?
