The Value of Godly Friendships
(Wes taught)

When we were created by the Lord, he placed in us a need for relationships.  We all have need for intimate relationships.  When that need is fulfilled in God’s way we get much pleasure  and satisfaction. However if we fulfill our desire for relationships in the wrong way, much heartache and pain will follow.

That is why much emphasis is placed on building Godly friendships throughout the book of Proverbs.  There are many excellent examples and warnings.

The warden at the federal pen here in Atlanta spoke of the wrong crowd.  He stated that virtually all inmates explained how they got in trouble by getting in with the wrong crowd.  My mother knew who they were!

We need to be aware of the levels of friendship.

  1. Acquaintance
  2. casual—freedom to exchange public information.
  3. close—same sex --?counseling—except engagement
  4. intimate  --same sex only--marriage
We need to carefully explain this to our children so that they can be ready for dating or whatever it’s called these days.  This will help avoid many problems later in the relationship.

Now let’s take a look at the timeless ideals found in the book of Proverbs.

  1. consider consequences of each relationship

  1. cultivate patience

  1. communicate loyalty and love
